Millions began on August 31, 1996 as the Big Game. With participating of six states Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan and Virginia. The first new game drawing as on September 6, 1996. After 1997 the exciting growth of the game, a Tuesday drawing was added in February 1998. With additional lotteries joining since then, Mega Millions is now played in 44 jurisdictions: 42 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
How To Play
Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p.m. Five balls are drawn from a set of balls numbered 1 through 56; one ball is drawn from a set of balls numbered 1 through 46. You win if the numbers on one row of your ticket match the numbers of the balls drawn on that date. There are nine ways to win a prize, from $2 to the jackpot. If no one wins the jackpot, the money is added to the jackpot for the next drawing. Overall chances of winning a prize are 1 in 40.
The largest Mega Millions jackpot, advertised as $640 million at the time of the drawing (annuitized) or $462 million (cash value), was drawn on Friday, March 30, 2012. The jackpot was split three ways, by winning tickets in Kansas, Illinois and Maryland.
