Another Powerball drawing failed to produce a high record winner on Saturday, January 9th after reaching a staggering $949.8 million jackpot earlier in the day. According to lottery officials, nobody had the winning numbers on Saturday, which could result in a whopping $1.4 billion jackpot on Wednesday, January 13th. The current estimated cash payout of the next drawing is $868 million before state and federal taxes. A ticket holder would only get $1.4 billion if he took the payout over time and invested it — something virtually no lottery winner ever does.

Powerball’s grand prize has increased steadily since November 7 after repeated drawings produced no big winners. It first broke into the top 10 largest jackpots ranking last weekend, when it hit $400 million. But last week ticket purchases surged, driving up the size of the pot. Before the current Powerball jackpot started to bound higher, the previous world record for a lottery prize that a single ticketholder was eligible to win was $656 million in a 2012 U.S. Mega Millions drawing. But that jackpot eventually went to three different ticketholders, A retired couple from Illinois, Merle and Patricia Butler, received one of the $218.6 million slices of the top prize.

Powerball winning numbers for Saturday, January 9, 2016 are 16, 19, 32, 34, 57. The Powerball number is 13.
